Public transport

Singapore is well served by all means of public transport. It has two land links with Malaysia, the Causeway to Johor Bahru, and the Tuas Second Link, a bridge further west, linking Tuas in Singapore to Tanjung Kupang in Johor.

The city pioneered the use of toll roads in the most congested city area. This is realized in the form of electronic toll collection under the Singapore Area Licensing Scheme. Thus private vehicles are not much encouraged, but taxis are abundant. All are fitted with meters, air-conditioned, equipped with radiophones. Taxis can be booked via GPS or digital voice dispatch. Among taxi companies are ComfortDelgro Taxis, SMRT Taxis, Union Energy Corporation TransCab, Premier Taxis SilverCab.

The city has well-developed railway transportation network. The major terminal is on Tanjong Pagar, linked to Malaysian KTM rail system. It runs to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a standard gauge system with a total rail network length of 109 km. It includes 67 stations. There are three lines, the North East Line, operated by SBS Transit, North-South Line and East-West Line, both operated by SMRT Corporation. The fourth Circle line is currently under construction, scheduled to open in 2010.

Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system with 14 stations was opened at Bukit Panjang in 1998. Sengkang LRT Line was opened in 2003. "Sentosa Express" monorail by Hitachi Asia was opened in January, 2007, connecting the Sentosa Island with mainland. It is also linked by means of cable car running to Mount Faber on the mainland.

Buses operate in various routes within the city centre and in suburbs. They are given great preference and promotion by the municipal government in contrast with the public transport. Main bus operators are SBS Transit, SMRT Corporation.
