Singapore is the island city-state located on the southern point of Malay Peninsula. The former British colony, since its independence it showed overwhelming improvement in the life standards and economy, scoring among the so-called "Asian Tigers", the countries, who displayed rapid economic increase. Its economy is based on electronics manufacturing and financial operations. The state has 18^th position in the world in terms of GDP per capita.

Singapore culture is a modern cosmopolitan fusion of Malay, Chinese, English lifestyles with strong influence of Indian and Arab immigration. Each culture observes its own customs while integrating with other ones. Major public holidays reflect this diversity, incorporating Chinese New Year, Buddhist Vesak Day, Muslim Eid ul-Fitr and Christmas Day. There are distinct ethnic neighbourhoods, including Little India, Chinatown and Campong Glam.

In the recent years the city turned to a major centre of arts and entertainment. Especially flourished theatrical arts, with several groups, such as TheatreWorks, performing overseas. Other prominent local arts groups are Singapore Dance Theatre, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Indian Orchestra and Choir, the Singapore Lyric Opera. Notable performers originating from the city include Michelle Alicia Saram, Stephanie Sun, Vanessa Mae.

The city's film industry developed relatively late, but in recent years issued several notable productions, like I Not Stupid and Homerun, which dealt with important cultural challenges. The city has incomparably developed cyberculture, promoting blogging as its main element.

Extreme variety of sports and recreational activities include soccer, swimming, badminton, basketball, table tennis. Residential areas have well organised recreational grounds, often with swimming pools, basketball courts and indoor sport centres. Proximity to the sea allows practicing sailing, kayaking and waterskiing, rich coral reefs provide perfect scuba diving experience.
