Singapore Singapore Singapore airport

Singapore airport

Singapore Changi airport is the major aviation hub in the Southeastern Asian region, located approximately 20 km from the commercial city centre. It is the home base for Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia Airways, Valuair, and the major hub for Garuda Indonesia and Quantas.

In 2006 the airport handled 35 million passengers. It is the 22nd busiest airport in the world and 6th in Asia. It accounts for 4,054 weekly flights operated by 80 airlines to over 184 cities in 57 countries. Since its opening Changi displayed high service standards, winning 250 awards up to 2006.  Among them the prizes, granted by International Air Transport Association, Business Traveller and Skytrax, which named it the best airport of the year in 2006.

The Airport has two parallel runways, both equipped with four sets of Instrument Landing System to guide landing aircraft safely under any weather conditions. The third runway is currently used as a part of Singapore Air Forces infrastructure, but the future expansion plans are aimed to converting it for passenger use.

Changi Airport has tree terminals, equipped with passenger moving system. The fourth is currently under construction. The terminal for low-cost carriers was opened in 2006. The airport has more than 30,000 square metres spread between two main terminals for shopping and eating outlets. 30% of the airport revenues come from commercial space rental and a percentage of sale receipts. Brands as Prada, Gucci, Bulgari and Hermes opened their boutiques.

In addition to restaurants and boutiques, the Airport has six open-air garden areas. Each of them represents a particular group of plants: cacti, bamboo, heliconia, sunflower, fern and orchid. Various lounge areas are provided, as well as Internet and games facilities, prayer rooms, showers, spas, gym, swimming pool and a hotel.
